Jeffrey Poirier

[France/ based in Canada]

Artist Profile:

Jeffrey Poirier is a French-Canadian artist whose practice is installation-oriented. For some years, he has been developing a body of work which hybrid structures, inspired by architecture and presentation displays, are in fact diffusion platforms for ideas related to the notion of our material culture and its relation to the natural environment. His work questions movements and symptoms related to diffuse feeling of endemic threat that weighs on ecology, implicit in our individual and collective ways of life. His installation artworks develop this controversial subject in the form of a sensation, while affirming its distance from current scientific considerations.

Residency Plan:

During his residency at Youkobo Art Space, Jeffrey will explore new material possibilities: his research will emphasize materials that are important archetypes of our era as they present an advance, a solution to a problem, while revealing our vulnerability and dependence to an healthy ecology. With this in mind, his purpose will be to develop some prototypes that would be in a near future, developed on a larger scale, through future exhibition projects. The prototypes elaborated during his stay at Youkobo Art Space would be presented through an open studio event which will take place on the last week of his residency.
Jeffrey Poirier receives financial support from Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Conseil des arts du Canada, Ville de Québec and Les Offices Jeunesses Internationaux du Québec.
