Open Talk About Artist in Residence - Youkobo Art Space + KAIR
8th December 2013(Sun) 18:00-19:00 Venue: Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo/KAIR, Koscie, Slovakia
Participants: Hiroko + Tatsuhiko Murata, Mika Harigai, Emma Ota, Haruka Watanabe
Adele Foldynova, Manabu Kanai

As part of an ongoing program of exchange between Youkobo Art Space and 2013 European Capital of Culture Kosice's KAIR residence program Manabu Kanai has been joining a 3 month residence between October-December at the KAIR facilities. During his stay Youkobo took the opportunity to connect with him and the KAIR director Adele Foldynova via skype and learn more about their residence activities.

Kanai introduced the developments of his artist in residence program and his encounters in everyday life, living in Kosice. Usually creating site specific works for a space with a visible history and function he was faced with a challenge as to how to approach the newly renovated spaces of KAIR's latest venue, which appeared to be devoid of a past. Furthermore Kanai spoke of his experience of being removed from the pressures of everyday life in Japan, gaining greater independence and with the mix of different cultures present in the city, such as Hungarian, Roma and Jewish populations, Kanai was able to appreciate the flow of cultural identity upon another level, realizing that this identity is temporary, fluid and open to reconstruction.

The although a historic city, with many traditional architectures and Slovakia's oldest church, the landscapes of Kosice are dominated by grey soviet era high rise flats, which are just another part of the everyday scenery for local people, but a source of great interest for many of the artists who stay here. Since its instigation in 2010 KAIR has welcomed over 30 international artists and sent 20 Slovakia based artists abroad and despite the European Capital of Culture program finishing in Kosice at the end of this year, KAIR still intends to continue and develop its activities. Artists staying at KAIR are particularly encouraged to produce site specific work and respond to their environment in a way which may open up new discoveries for the people of Kosice about their own neighborhood and way of living. Kanai also referred to the presence of artists in Kosice as a symbol of freedom, without the usual constraints of everyday work and life, which may provide an inspiration for the citizens of Kosice.
