unforgettable landscapes#1(pigeon loft)

Natsumi Sakamoto [Japan]

2012.08.29 - 2012.09.02

Asking him the question, "will you tell me about a landscape which has stayed in your memory?", he told me about an afternoon he spent with his grandfather who had passed on. On that day, his grandfather talked of a large pigeon house which used to be on the roof - This is the first exhibition in the "unforgettable landscapes" series which draw the landscapes of memory based on words cut out from conversations with strangers.

Natsumi Sakamoto creates installations mainly with paintings, performance, photography and video, under the themes of ‘memory and place’ and ‘others’ memories and stories’. Her exhibited works include ‘The way to connect with the world’ (Yarimizu Seinen Museum 2007), ‘I am the forest.’ (Graduation work, 2009), ‘FOLLOW TO YOUR DESTINATION’ (The 14th Taro Okamoto Contemporary Art Award 2011).

Artist statement:
The scene spreading before your eyes at this moment will become a landscape of the past in an instant, and before long this will become part of memory. Do we gather fragmentary landscapes in order to also move today.― Though primitive, I retain a wish to return to one of these such landscapes.
