Soji Shimizu, Nobuo Yoda [Japan]

2014.06.11 - 2014.06.29

Shimizu is interested in the process of painting, and in the relationship of the fictional and the non-fictional in the visual outcome and the source material. In this exhibition,Shimizu attempts to reconsider the idea of “frame”. A painting exists in the disjunction between the inside and outside of a rectangle. He explores the edge of the canvaswherein the border exists, the way the “frame” is presented, and its relationship with space.

Through the observation of everyday life, gestures, andfictions including films and novels, Yoda attempts to sortand treat their components without establishing ahierarchical differentiation between what is material andwhat is immaterial (moods, feelings, rhetoric etc),recomposing these elements so as to present the experience of the gradation between cognition and its gaps, and between those gaps and cognition.

The relation between the works of the two artists is a relation of reciprocal use, dependence, contribution, interference, cooperation, which makes room for adialogue where new, differing aspects and layers arise.
