Ismael de Anda

[USA]

Asian Cultural Council grantee and Youkobo Art Space Tokyo Artist-in-Residence, Los Angeles based artist Ismael de Anda III will participate in a group exhibition organized by Tokyo University of the Arts for the city-wide GTS sightseeing project.

Inspired by the Japanese folding screen, de Anda’s new work makes parallels between the Sumida River and his upbringing near the Rio Grande River on the U.S./Mexico border. The screen like a river is a division between two spaces. De Anda’s screen uses cutout shapes allowing the viewer to see through to the other side as a possible unification of spaces on both sides of the screen. The work’s title Hasta la Próxima…, Spanish slang for ‘until we meet again’, incorporates de Anda’s current research comparing and contrasting rituals of Japanese Obon with Mexican Dia de los Muertos, both ceremonies for welcoming the return of departed loved ones from the otherside.

De Anda's work will also be shown at Youkobo Art Space on November 3.
